Schmidli, Karin: Models and Modifications Early African-American Women Writers
From the Slave Narrative to the Novel. The study discusses a representative group of six 19th-century African-American women writers and shows how each individual author and each individual text contributes to a movement towards increasing literary independence. These black women authors were influenced in part by English and American literature and by the African oral tradition. However, their specific experiences triggered a literature which - in form, plot, message, and characterization - differed from that of their black male contemporaries.
