Zones of Fracture in Modern Europe: the Baltic Countries, the Balkans, and Northern Italy
Zone di frattura in epoca moderna: Il Baltico, i Balcani e l'Italia settentrionale. Edited by Almut Bues. 17 contributions, two of them in Italian, analyze the specificities of zones of fracture in terms of geographic-historical classification and political, social, economic, cultural and confessional patterns. For the time before the emergence of nation-states, it is convenient to think in European cases, which indicate instability or cooperation in these zones of contact. Three representative geographic regions have been central to an international conference: Poland-Lithuania has been linked with two zones (the Baltic Sea and the Balkans). The Northern Italian States were situated between two tectonic regions (the Balkans and the Rhine valley). The Balkans by themselves were divided into various mini zones, and confronted with the Ottoman Empire. VII,292 Seiten mit einigen Abb., Leinen (Deutsches Historisches Institut Warschau.
